Six held over AKA murder, one more wanted

Six people have been arrested in connection with the sensational murder of chat rhymer Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and chef and businessman Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. The two were shot dead outside a well-known restaurant in Durban on 10 February last year.

The police announced late on Tuesday evening that the 35-year-old musician was followed from the Durban airport to his hotel in Umhlanga and then to the Wish restaurant where he and Motsoane (34) were shot dead.

Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, chief of police in KwaZulu-Natal, says the suspects played different roles in the assassinations. This includes the “coordinator”, two shooters, two people who kept a lookout – also by following Forbes from the airport and watching from the restaurant – as well as the person who allegedly provided the vehicles and firearms.

Four of the suspects are also linked to other murder cases. Two of the six were apprehended in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and have yet to be brought to South Africa. A seventh person involved is still being sought.

Earlier, the police said they had located the murder weapon and the vehicles used during and after the murder, but at that stage no arrests had been made.

Four of the suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
