Six people were killed and one wounded in an attack at a kindergarten in southern China’s Guangdong province.

The incident took place in the city of Lianjiang. “The victims include one teacher, two parents and three learners,” said a government spokesperson.

No details were provided on the identity and age of the victims, nor on the weapon used in the attack.

“One suspect has been arrested,” the spokesperson said, adding that a police investigation is underway.

Mass attacks are rare in China – a country that strictly prohibits its citizens from owning firearms. However, mass attacks with a knife have started to emerge in recent years. This includes attacks in which toddlers and school children were specifically targeted.

In August, three people were killed and six others wounded during a knife attack on a private kindergarten in the Anfu district of Jiangxi province.
