Speeding motorist stopped at 225 km/h

A motorist was handcuffed on the N1 near Bela-Bela in the Waterberg district on Sunday after driving at a speed of 225 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

The 40-year-old man was stopped behind the wheel of a white Audi Q7 and was expected to appear in the magistrate’s court at Bela-Bela on Monday on charges of reckless driving, says Tidimalo Chuene, spokesperson for the department of transport and community safety in Limpopo.

The arrest follows shortly after that of the driver of an Audi Q5 who was stopped shortly before Christmas on the N1 near Mokopane, also in the Waterberg district. RNews reported that this 29-year-old man was arrested after allegedly speeding 213 km/h in a 120 km/h zone near Mokopane.

Chuene says a total of 19 speeders have been arrested on the roads of Limpopo since the beginning of December.

In the Waterberg district, nine drivers were arrested in the past month. The highest speed recorded here was 225 km/h in a 120 km/h zone. In the Steenbok district, eight motorists were arrested.

In one of these incidents, the speedometer read 185 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

In the Mopani district, two drivers were arrested, one of whom was speeding at 146 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Chuene says these arrests testify to the department’s zero tolerance attitude towards reckless drivers who endanger the lives of other road users.
