Phase 6 load shedding will be implemented from Wednesday afternoon, after which it will be alternated daily with phase 4 load shedding.
“Due to the loss of additional generation units during the night, the increased use of open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) and the inability to replenish pumped storage schemes levels, phase 4 load shedding will be introduced on Wednesday from 07:00 to 14:00,” announced the power supplier.
Phase 6 load shedding will then be applied from 14:00 to 05:00 on Thursday and the pattern will be repeated daily until further notice.
Bitterly cold conditions have prevailed in large parts of the country since Monday and the increased demand for power has forced Eskom to switch to higher phases of load shedding.
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said this weekend that the load-shedding problem will be solved much faster than expected. “The date is on the horizon,” he said without giving an exact date.
