Stormers must win on tour – Dobson

The Stormers have good results in their sights for their short overseas United Rugby Championship adventure. The Capetians will play against the Dragons and Connacht in Europe, before taking on the Lions again at home on 1 June.

John Dobson is pleased with Saturday’s 42-12 win against Leinster, but can still only shake his head over last week’s shock defeat to the Ospreys.

“We are now under pressure as far as the standings are concerned. If only we had played better against the Ospreys, we would have been just two points behind the Bulls last weekend with a home play-off game within our reach,” said the Stormers coach.

The Stormers currently occupy fifth place in the standings with their 45 points, but Connacht (44 points), Ulster (44 points), Benetton (44 points) and Edinburgh (43 points) are breathing down their necks.

“Now we simply have to win on tour and we have never been so desperate before. We are taking our Springbok players together and we have been persuaded to throw everything into the battle to win.”

According to Dobson, he was particularly proud of his players’ fighting spirit against Leinster.

“One could see that we had not fired completely on all cylinders, but the guys refused to lie down. The team got back up after last weekend’s floundering and made its physical presence felt.”
