Heavy rain is on the way for large parts of the country.

The South African Weather Service (SAWD) issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with possible strong wind, hail and heavy rain for several provinces on Friday morning.

This warning applies to the central and eastern parts of North-West, the eastern parts of the Free State, Gauteng, the south-western parts of Limpopo, the Highveld of Mpumalanga as well as the western and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

The City of Tshwane’s emergency services appealed to residents of the metro this afternoon to be careful.

Charles Mabaso, spokesperson for the Tshwane emergency services, advises residents in response to the weather warnings to stay indoors and away from metal objects.

“Don’t seek shelter under trees or tall objects.”

Mabaso also advises people not to cross low-lying roads or bridges amid the rain.

“Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and/or excessive rain can accompany storms. We further appeal to residents to be vigilant and report any incidents immediately to 107 (toll-free) or to 012 358 6300/6400.”
