Parts of the east of Pretoria are without power after 20 miscreants attacked a substation during load shedding on Monday and stole power cables.

Lindela Mashigo, spokesperson for the Tshwane metro council, says the group stormed the Heatherley substation in the early hours of the morning (during a two-hour load shedding) and overwhelmed the security officers.

At least nine power cables were stolen. The substation was vandalized and this caused a fire.

The entire power station has since been out of action which means that the Savannah estate, Greencreek estate, The Blyde estate, Nellmapius extension 3,6,7,8 and 22 and Pienaarspoort have no electricity until further notice.

A technical team is already at the power station to determine the extent of the damage and carry out the necessary repairs.

“The Tshwane Metro Council condemns these acts of vandalism and appeals to residents to report any suspicious activity to the Tshwane Metro Police on 012 358 7095/6 or the cable theft hotline on 080 011 2722.

“The city apologizes for the inconvenience caused by these acts of vandalism and the sabotage of infrastructure.”
