Sunrisers radiate success in SA20

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape underlined its status as the go-to cricket team in the country when it successfully defended its SA20 title.

The Eastern Cape beat the Durban Super Giants by 89 runs at a neutral Newlands.

Captain Aiden Markram said during the coin toss session that runs on the scoreboard are important in a final and his players did not disappoint.

Tom Abell and Jordan Hermann set the ball rolling with their good partnership of 90 runs for the second wicket, after which Markram together with Tristan Stubbs rounded things off with a couple of boundary shots.

After 20 overs, the Sunrisers had 204/3 on the scoreboard and the Super Giants would have to know their story to surpass this score.

However, things started in the worst possible way for the Durbanites.

The struggling Quinton de Kock was clean bowled, while Marco Jansen took the wickets of JJ Smuts and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the blink of an eye.

Before the Super Giants could say “let’s keep our fingers crossed for a good run-up to our turn”, the score was 7/3.

The only batsman who could save them was Heinrich Klaasen. But he could not build on his heroics of the previous innings and he was caught leg before wicket with his first delivery.

Players such as Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius tried well, but Jansen took five wickets, while Ottniel Baartman once again showed that he is one of the top bowlers in the country.

Yes-no, the cricketing sun shines brightly on the Sunrisers.
