Suspected serial rapist caught

A 30-year-old suspected serial rapist was arrested in Limpopo on Saturday.

“The police’s preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect is connected to 12 separate rape cases,” says col. Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the police.

The incidents took place in Mecklenburg, Tubatse, Burgersfort and Driekop.

“The community, especially women, were subjected to the worst form of violence and torture when they were allegedly raped by this callous man.”

The suspect attacked women between 2015 and 2022.

In one of the incidents, on 27 May 2017, a 14-year-old girl from Selala in Mecklenburg went to visit a friend. “She allegedly shared a taxi with two male occupants on her way back home. However, the taxi drove past the place where she had to get off. They drove to a forest. She tried to flee, but they chased her, caught her and raped her. They both raped her.”

It is reported that in all the cases the suspects targeted young and middle-aged women and raped them in turn without condoms. The women were threatened with a firearm and a knife.

“The 30-year-old suspect is linked by DNA to 12 cases committed between 2015 and 2022.”

In another incident, a 26-year-old woman from Mashamthane was raped by three men on 27 October 2020. She visited a friend in a nearby town and on the way back three unknown men attacked her. She was dragged into the woods and repeatedly raped.

The provincial unit against family violence and sexual offenses (FCS) and the serial and electronic crime investigation unit led by Capt. Ramoneta, investigated and the 30-year-old suspect was identified and arrested.

Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe, provincial police commissioner, also praised the work by members of the Burgersfort FCS.

Two suspects are still on the run. The police investigation continues.

The 30-year-old suspect will soon appear on 12 charges of rape in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court.
