The Swartberg Pass is currently closed due to a serious accident on Saturday evening in which the rear part of a lorry transporting oranges left the road at a sharp bend.

The driver sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“The team from J&B in George is currently on the scene where they are trying to recover the truck and remove the trailer,” says a statement from the Oudtshoorn municipality.

“Unfortunately, it was deemed too dangerous to carry out the clean-up work in the dark on Saturday night.

“We understand the inconvenience that closing the Swartberg Pass may cause, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time,” the statement said.

“Safety remains our highest priority, and we will keep residents informed of the progress of the clean-up work.

“Our thoughts are with the driver and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
