Ten houses were destroyed in a fire at an informal settlement in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday morning.
Residents contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) around 11:40 and called for assistance. All available officers were deployed and upon their arrival at the scene several wooden and steel houses were in light boxes. Most of the houses were closed.
Rusa officers had to use bolt cutters to gain access and remove the contents. Rusa members and residents used buckets of water to try to extinguish the flames.
According to Rusa, illegal electricity connections are suspected to be the cause of the fire. This has yet to be confirmed.
