The South African Police Service (SAPS) destroyed more than 15,700 firearms in Vanderbijlpark on Thursday.
No less than 54,517 firearms have been taken out of circulation since April this year.
Brig. Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the police, says ballistic tests have already been carried out on the firearms that were destroyed on Thursday and it could be determined that none of these firearms were used in the commission of a crime.
The firearms that were destroyed were either confiscated or the firearm owners voluntarily handed them over to the police.
“The SAPS will continue to intensify operations to locate and remove illegal firearms and ammunition on the streets of South Africa, as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the residents of this country,” says Mathe.
