Three brothers shot dead at initiation school

Three brothers are dead and a fourth brother is fighting for his life after a shooting incident at an initiation school in the Eastern Cape.

According to col. Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said the grandfather of the victims was informed by community members about the shooting incident at the initiation school in Nqamakwe near Butterworth in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“Community members went to investigate and came across the bodies of the three brothers, aged between 18 and 26.” A fourth brother (22) was shot in his upper body and was admitted to hospital.

The suspect(s) are unknown at this stage and the motive for the shooting has yet to be determined. The police are investigating three cases of murder and one of attempted murder.

The provincial Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs said it was cooperating with the police in connection with the incident.

Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene, provincial police commissioner, condemned the incident.

“The police are committed to bringing the perpetrator(s) to justice and we will do everything in our power to ensure accountability for this heinous act. The loss of young lives, especially of one family, is devastating and we convey our condolences to the family.”
