Three detectives arrested who apparently demand a bribe

Three police detectives were arrested by the Hawks after they allegedly demanded a bribe from a member of the public to avoid arrest.

According to Lt. Col. Tinyiko Mathebula, police spokesperson, said the three policemen, aged between 39 and 48, were arrested on Monday at a shopping center in Hebron in the North West.

“The three apparently requested a bribe from a man in order not to arrest him. They allegedly demanded R6 000 and the complainant was able to pay them R2 000.

“The suspects apparently contacted the complainant and demanded the outstanding amount. After the matter was brought to the attention of the Hawks, an operation was started and the three were arrested shortly after they received R4 000 from the complainant.”

The suspects will appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of corruption.
