Three people died when several vehicles were involved in collisions on the N12 highway between Emalahleni and Ogies in Mpumalanga on Thursday morning.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the department of community safety in Mpumalanga, the accident can mainly be attributed to the dense fog that obstructed motorists’ visibility on the road.

“It has yet to be determined how many vehicles were involved in the accident. We can say that trucks, including a fuel tanker, sedans and light delivery vehicles were involved,” says Mmusi.

The three deceased were occupants of one of the cars.

The police and emergency personnel are still on the scene. The road is closed to traffic and motorists are requested to use alternative routes.

“Motorists should reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and turn on their headlights when driving in foggy conditions.”
