Three guilty of Mihalik murder

The famous lawyer Pete Mihalik’s three murderers were found guilty of his murder in the High Court in Cape Town this week.

Sizwe Biyela, Nkosinathi Khumalo and Vuyile Maliti were found guilty on Wednesday of one charge of murder, two charges of attempted murder, one charge of illegal possession of a firearm and one charge of illegal possession of ammunition.

Sentencing proceedings have since begun.

The three men’s sentences are expected to be handed down next Thursday (August 10).

Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape, says that Judge Constance Nziweni devoted three days to the verdict this week.

The murder case was pending for five years.

Mihalik, a criminal lawyer who appeared for some of Cape Town’s most notorious gang members, was shot in the head at close range on the morning of 30 October 2018 while dropping off his children at Reddam House, a private school in Groenpunt.

Mihalik’s son (then 8) was wounded in the jaw on the day in question. He has since made a full recovery. Mihalik’s daughter (then 17) was sitting in the back of the car at the time and was not injured in the shooting.
