The police in KwaZulu-Natal shot dead three suspected hitmen in Eshowe on Thursday afternoon.

According to col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson, officers followed up on information about armed suspects who were apparently on their way to carry out an assassination.

The suspects were stopped near King Dinuzulu in Eshowe and police officers signaled for them to stop.

“The suspects sped away and a high-speed chase ensued. When they realized that the police were catching up to them, the three suspects got out of their vehicle and opened fire on the police. The officers returned fire and the three suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout.”

A police officer was wounded during the shootout.

Two firearms and ammunition were found in the suspects’ possession. A hand grenade and more ammunition were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

According to Netshiunda, two of the deceased were allegedly involved in several cases of taxi-related murder and attempted murder in the King Cetshwayo district.
