Three people were killed and one seriously injured when a light aircraft crashed in Emalahleni in Mpumalanga on Sunday afternoon.

The fatal accident happened near the local airport on the outskirts of the town.

Gavin Cooper, spokesman for Legacy emergency medical services, says the call for assistance came in around 3.45pm.

The wreckage of the light aircraft was engulfed in flames when paramedics arrived. Employees of a nearby mine rushed to the aid of paramedics and extinguished the flames.

An adult man, believed to be 40 years old, suffered multiple burns and other injuries. He was treated at the scene before being transported to the Witbank Provincial Hospital for further medical treatment.

The man indicated that there were still three occupants, including the pilot, in the plane when it crashed. The three people were burned beyond recognition, says Cooper.

The cause of the accident is still unclear.

RNews has made an inquiry to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and is awaiting a response.
