Three-year-old shoots baby sister dead

A one-year-old girl was shot dead by her three-year-old sibling in California in the USA.

According to the San Diego County police, the incident took place on Monday in Fallbrook, about 90 km from San Diego.

The three-year-old obtained an unsecured handgun and accidentally shot the sister in the head. She was taken to a hospital where she died shortly afterwards.

It is not yet clear at this stage whether the parents were at home or what the exact circumstances were that gave rise to the incident. It has also not been disclosed whether the three-year-old is a boy or a girl.

The police are investigating the incident.

NBC News reports that there are shooting incidents in America every year where children have obtained weapons and that since the beginning of the year there have apparently been 217 incidents that have led to 76 deaths.

RNews reported last month that a pregnant woman and her unborn child died in the US state of Ohio after her two-year-old son shot her in the back.

The 31-year-old Laura Ilg was 33 weeks pregnant and was rushed to a hospital where unsuccessful attempts were made to save her unborn baby with an emergency caesarean section. Ilg succumbed to her injuries hours later.

In March this year, a three-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her four-year-old sister near Houston, Texas.
