Traditional healer fasts who believes child abducted

A traditional healer was arrested early Sunday morning after he allegedly kidnapped a child at the Boitumelo shopping center in Welkom the day before.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson, says the mother of the almost two-year-old girl went to the local police station on Saturday after her child went missing.

Officers attached to the unit for domestic violence, child protection and sexual offenses launched an investigation into the incident and came across footage of the alleged kidnapping.

“The footage showed a man grabbing a young child at the relevant shopping center and putting her in a car before driving away with her,” says Thakeng.

The police launched a search, after which it came to light that the suspect is a traditional healer. The police visited several traditional healers and received information about the man’s whereabouts.

“The officers came across the little girl early on Sunday,” says Thakeng.

“She was found safe and reunited with her parents.”

The 45-year-old healer was arrested and is facing charges of kidnapping. He is expected to appear in the magistrate’s court in Welkom soon.

Maj. Gen. District Commissioner Tholie Afonso welcomed the arrest, but also warned parents to keep a close eye on their children, especially in busy public spaces such as shopping centres.
