The Tshwane Metro Council is still knee deep in debt to Eskom with an outstanding power bill of almost R1.9 billion.

According to Eskom, the metro council underpaid a total of R179 million for March.

The metro’s power bill for April, which amounts to R776 million and was due by 18 May, has still not been settled.

Eskom has also already issued the council’s power bill for May, which amounts to R904 million. The council has until June 17 to pay this amount.

“Eskom has spoken to the metro council on several occasions about its failure to settle its debts,” says Eskom.

Eskom appealed to the metro council to immediately settle its debts for March and April.

“Eskom does not have the financial capacity to continue supplying electricity to the city without the necessary payment.

“Eskom has in the past escalated this matter to the national treasury and the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and despite all these efforts the situation worsens.”
