Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a police constable in Vosloorus, Gauteng.

According to Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, a group of police officers responded to a business robbery in the settlement on Friday when the 32-year-old const. Siyabonga Thango was fatally wounded.

“The investigation team has mobilized all its resources to catch the constable’s suspected killers,” confirms Mathe.

On Sunday, the team followed up on information about the whereabouts of the suspects. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects.

“Two suspects, respectively 27 and 29 years old, were arrested and three firearms were confiscated.”

The 27-year-old suspect was wounded during the shooting and later died of his injuries in hospital.

General Fannie Masemola, the national police commissioner, welcomed the speedy arrests.

“Those who are responsible for the attacks and murders of police officers must receive the maximum prison sentence, because this is also an attack on the authority of the state,” says Masemola.

Masemola expressed his condolences to Thango’s friends and family.

Thango was connected to the police service for five years.
