Two suspects, respectively 24 and 30 years old, were arrested on Tuesday after they apparently hijacked a car and kidnapped two people.
The two victims, a man (25) and a woman (42), were threatened with a firearm at around 19:00 at Stanfords Cove in Gansbaai, after which their car was hijacked and they were kidnapped. The suspects later forced the man to withdraw cash from an ATM in Bredasdorp.
According to Lt. Col. Malcolm Pojie, police spokesperson, said the police in Bredasdorp were on the lookout for a hijacked vehicle at around 21:40 when they spotted a bakkie matching the description of the hijacked car.
“They tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped away, after which a high-speed chase followed. However, the road was blocked by police members moments later and the vehicle was forced to stop.
“The members searched the vehicle and the victims who were kidnapped earlier were found.”
The police arrested the two suspects and seized a 9 mm pistol and an unknown amount of cash.
The two suspects are facing charges of hijacking, kidnapping and extortion as well as the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm.
“Both suspects are expected to appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Thursday).”
