Two men are behind bars after they were caught with items believed to have been looted at a murder scene on a farm at Saasveld, near George in the Western Cape, on Sunday evening.

A 37-year-old man died in the attack.

Lt. Col. Malcolm Pojie, police spokesperson, says two suspects with balaclavas – armed with a firearm and a knife – entered the house at around 10.10pm on Sunday, shortly after loadshedding kicked in. They apparently assaulted a woman in her room and then also ransacked the room of the victim’s parents-in-law, respectively 72 and 61 years old.

The victim entered the room, a struggle ensued and the armed attackers shot the man dead, says Pojie.

According to him, the suspects fled the scene with a black laptop, a maroon bag and two mobile phones belonging to the victims. Detectives from George police’s serious and violent crime unit traced these items to a shop near Parkdene on George. Two men were arrested there on Monday for possession of suspected stolen items. The police also seized the mobile phones and computer.

“The two suspects are facing charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property and will appear in the George Magistrate’s Court as soon as they are charged,” says Pojie.

Lt. Gen. Thembisile Patekile, provincial police chief, strongly condemned the attack and commended the investigation team for the meticulous investigative work that led to the arrest of the two suspects.

The investigation into the murder continues.
