A police officer and an operator of a towing service were killed when a truck plowed into an accident scene in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. A paramedic was hospitalized in a critical condition.

The paramedic is attached to the emergency service ALS Paramedics.

According to Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics, paramedics responded just after 22:00 on Friday to a lorry that overturned on the N3 south near the Liberty shopping center in Pietermaritzburg.

“When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the truck on its side,” says Jamieson.

“RTI traffic police cordoned off the scene and placed vehicles strategically to warn other motorists in time that there is an accident scene.”

Paramedics were treating the driver of the truck for minor injuries when another truck plowed into the crash scene.

“A police officer and a towing service operator died during this secondary accident while our paramedic sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. The paramedic underwent emergency surgery.”

The circumstances surrounding the secondary accident are being investigated.

On behalf of the emergency services, Jamieson expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues.

“We also wish the paramedic a speedy recovery.”

RNews already made inquiries with the provincial police early Saturday morning, but is still waiting for a response. Their comments will be updated as soon as they are received.
