The police in Mpumalanga are investigating a gruesome double murder in which two victims were burned to death at Nhlalakahle Trust in Masoyi.

The bodies of a 36-year-old and a 39-year-old man were discovered by members of the community at around 08:30 on Saturday morning, after which the police were called to the scene.

According to Brig. Selvy Mohlala, police spokesperson, one of the deceased was found outside a vehicle while the second body was found in the burnt out vehicle.

“The victims were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.”

Mohlala says information from preliminary investigations indicates that the victims were killed following allegations of livestock theft in the area.

“The police appeal to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to call the StopCrime number on 08600 10111 or send information via the MYSAPSAPP.”

Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, strongly condemned incidents where members of the community resort to taking the law into their own hands.

She reiterated the call to report all criminal activities to the police for proper investigation and fair prosecution.

“Bond violence will never be a solution to crime and we call on communities to work hand in hand with the police to combat crime. One cannot correct one crime with another crime.”
