Two suspected bank card thieves were caught on Friday morning after they apparently robbed a victim of a bank card at Manny’s supermarket in Kroonstad.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson, says members of Welkom’s dog unit were informed about the suspects who apparently drove in a silver sedan at around 07:00.

“Kroonstad Neighborhood Watch immediately deployed resources to locate and pursue the suspects. The vehicle was spotted moments later where it was speeding in the direction of Welkom. Members of the dog unit forced the suspects to stop shortly after near Riebeeckstad near Welkom.

“The two occupants were searched, after which cash amounting to R3 100 was found with them. Preliminary investigation shows that the same suspects robbed a man in Senekal of his bank card, and withdrew an amount of R3 700 from his account.”

Thakeng says the silver sedan in which the suspects sped away came from a vehicle rental service in Welkom.

“The two suspects, respectively 36 and 48 years old, were arrested on charges of robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and reckless and dangerous driving.

“A silver Hyundai i20 with a GP registration number, two mobile phones, two Okapi knives, slips, papers, as well as cash amounting to R3 100 were seized.”

The suspects will soon appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.
