Two traffic officers arrested for corruption

Two members connected to the Mkhuhlu driving license test center in Mpumalanga were arrested on Monday by the Hawks’ unit for serious corruption in Nelspruit after it was found that they had allegedly committed fraud by asking for compensation.

Capt. Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Hawks, says a complainant claims that she went to the Mkhuhlu driving license test center on January 8 to write a learner’s driving license test.

“She did not pass the test, after which a woman – who supervised – approached her and told her that she could only be helped to pass the test if she could pay a total of R 1000.

“It was agreed that she make another appointment to write the test, after which she was able to get an appointment for Monday (January 15). The matter was reported to the Hawks’ serious corruption unit and section 252A authorization was granted. The complainant was used as an agent to arrest the suspects,” says Sekgotodi.

The Hawks later found that many learner’s license applicants had paid compensation to be able to pass the test.

Bribes of more than R10 000 were found in the suspects’ possession.

The suspects were immediately arrested. They are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
