The wider West Coast community was plunged into mourning by the death of a young hotel manager who was well known among residents.

Markus “Makkie” Bester (34), manager of the Laaiplek hotel in Velddrif, died instantly in a car accident on Saturday evening when he was on his way to visit friends.

His brother, Stegmann, and his daughter (7) were seriously injured and hospitalized.

Details of exactly how the accident happened are not yet known.

Laaiplek hotel confirmed this news in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“Our hearts are broken, but forever the best boss will be present in our hearts and in the hotel, in every aspect”, reads the post.

Meanwhile, messages of condolence for Bester are pouring in on social media.

“Words cannot describe this terrible loss. Kiewiet-they (his parents) raised a good child. ‘Makkie’ was a special man. The Lord came to call him by his name and came to get him. He needs him himself up there now. Good luck to every family and staff member”, reads one of the Facebook entries.

Another entry reads: “The news is a big shock! We share in your loss. Loading space is empty. May the Lord be your strength in a time of mourning. It’s a very big loss! We pray for healing and recovery.”

Markus was also a former student of Paarl Boys’ High School (HJS). The school’s alumni association also paid tribute to him in a Facebook post and wished his family strength in this difficult time.
