Video: Assaulter jumps judge before she can sentence him

A convicted criminal attacked a judge from the US state of Texas on Wednesday moments before she was to sentence him for assault.

Footage of the incident shows Deobra Delone Redden, 30, throwing himself across the bench and tackling Judge Mary Kay Holthus.

Court officials from the Clark County Courthouse in Las Vegas came to the judge’s rescue moments later and plucked Redden from her.

A spokesperson for the court says an officer was injured in the fight and later taken to a hospital. The judge suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

The altercation followed after Redden’s attorney asked the judge for parole rather than jail time. Redden is facing a charge of aggravated assault. However, the judge rejected this request.

“I think it’s time he got a taste of something else,” Holthus said before Redden attacked her.

Redden previously served prison time in Nevada after being convicted of gender-based violence.

According to the local news channel 8 News Now, Redden was charged anew with assault and the assault of a protected person.

Redden was directed to appear in court on the new charge on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Clark County court is reviewing its protocol in the wake of the attack.

“The heroic actions of the staff, law enforcement officers and all those who otherwise tried to stop the attacker are commendable,” said the spokesperson of the court.
