Video: Rory’s ball lands in spectator’s lap

If there’s one thing Rory McIlroy can do, it’s playing golf – even if it’s from a spectator’s lap.

The golf star from Northern Ireland teed off on the thirteenth hole at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), when the ball veered off the fairway and landed in a spectator’s lap… much to the amusement of the crowd.

McIlroy came to the ball where the spectator waited in dead silence, the ball still in her lap. While the rest of the crowd made way for four-time Major winner McIlroy to play his second shot on the Jumeirah course, he stood closer and pretended to play the shot out of her lap.

A laughing McIlroy then asked for a referee to stand closer and he indicated that he could drop the ball – but not without having a good laugh at the Northern Irishman’s predicament. The umpire asked her to hand the ball to McIlroy and said “you can move now, you’re excused” before she rejoined the rest of the crowd smiling.

“Let’s hope she’s not supposed to be at work today…” joked one of the TV commentators about the woman’s big moment in front of the world’s golf cameras.

McIlroy played the shot to the green and finished the hole one stroke over par.
