Eskom and load shedding, coalitions, Thabo Bester, the Titan submarine, war, the Springboks, Derek Watts and Barbie.

These are some of the few news events that made South Africans and the world sit up this year.

2023 was the worst year of load shedding yet despite the appointment of a minister of electricity. Eskom was already plunged into a crisis early in the year with the allegations by its former head André de Ruyter and his consequent resignation. Dan Marokane will take over the reins at Eskom by the end of March.

On the political front, there were several diplomatic missteps by the government, no allegations of corruption against politicians and less trust in the government. However, the year will be remembered for the cooperation by opposition parties and the efforts to form a united front against the ANC and EFF in next year’s election.

Thabo Bester’s escape from prison and the luxurious life he led made South Africans think of a surreal Hollywood script while the Titan submarine tragedy set the world on its feet.

Barbie was the most successful movie of the year and thanks to the Springboks’ World Cup victory, Friday 15 December was officially declared a public holiday.

2023 was also a year of war with the Israel-Hamas conflict that has been going on for almost three months with no end in sight. The war between Russia and Ukraine will have been going on for two years by February.
