A tornado that tore through Inanda and Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday afternoon caused great devastation.

According to Robert McKenzie, spokesman for the provincial emergency services, two people were treated for minor injuries. “They were in a container that overturned,” he said. The two patients were taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Several roofs in the Bhambayi informal settlement were blown off and power poles overturned.

A RNnews reader says it has been raining heavily in the area since Monday evening.

Edwin Cleophas, a Twitter user, said the weather turned quickly and they had to seek shelter in a hurry. “The tornado moved through the township and blew away roofs. Houses and tenements were destroyed!”

Hundreds of residents were left homeless. Heavy rain and strong winds continue.
