A fire broke out at Vodacom’s head office at Century City in Cape Town on Sunday.

Photos and videos show flames on the roof of the building with smoke billowing from the building.

Some social media users speculated that the company’s solar panels may have been the cause of the fire.

Byron Kennedy, spokesperson for Vodacom, told RNews that no injuries were reported. “It is a Sunday, so fortunately there were not many people in the office. The building was quickly and successfully evacuated.”

The fire brigade has been deployed and according to Kennedy it appears that the fire has been brought under control.

Vodacom does not yet have an idea of the extent of the damage that has been done.

“We will only be able to determine this later and later also determine the cause of the fire.”

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Cape Town’s fire and rescue service, says firefighters are still on the scene.

“The city’s fire brigade was notified just after 11:00 that the solar panels on the building’s roof had caught fire. Additional resources were deployed after the first team arrived at the scene.”

Carelse says two hydraulic platforms have also been deployed to the scene.

“Firefighters had to be on the lookout for debris falling from the roof while working in the building.”

He also confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far.

According to Carelse, there was extensive damage to the building.
