A man who has been wanted by the police for some time for murder and other violent crimes was shot dead along with five other suspects during a shootout with the police.

According to col. Robert Netshiunda, police spokesperson, said the shooting took place on Thursday afternoon on Abbot Francis Road in Marriannhill, Durban.

“Information led the police to the wanted suspects where they were driving in a car on the road in question. The police signaled that the suspects should pull off the road, after which the suspects fired shots at the police. The police fired back and a shootout ensued,” Netshiunda confirms.

Five suspects suffered fatal gunshot wounds during the shooting.

“The police were on the trail of one of the suspects and he is linked to a series of murders and other serious violent crimes.”

Among other things, he is connected to the Mariannhill scrap yards murders where five people were shot dead in two separate incidents in February this year.

The Independent Investigation Directorate (Opod) has been informed of the incident for further investigation.
