Try it here! is an informal cooking program where African celebrities, legends and influentials come to make a recipe that is close to their hearts.

In this episode, the mayor and his wife make a delicious steak and gluten-free mushroom sauce together, which is served with pan-fried beans.

Brink talks about what inspired him to enter the political landscape and tells how he maintains a balance between his role as mayor and family man.

Cilliers Brink’s steak and mushroom sauce

Ingredients

For the steak

  • cross disc
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • thyme (fresh)
  • 1 tbsp butter

For the sauce

  • 1/2 pack of mushrooms
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • 1 small white onion
  • 1 t cornflour (Maizena)
  • 500 ml fresh cream
  • oil

For the beans

  • green beans
  • a handful of sunflower seeds
  • salt to taste
  • olive oil

Method

  1. Brush the steak with olive oil and season with salt, pepper and thyme. Keep aside.
  2. Finely chop the mushrooms and garlic cloves.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and fry onions, mushrooms and garlic over low heat until light brown. Add cornflour and cream and stir. Let sauce simmer over low heat.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and fry green beans and sunflower seeds on low heat. Add salt to taste.
  5. Heat butter in a pan and fry steak for 4 minutes on one side, depending on the thickness of the cut.
  6. Cut the steak into strips and serve with sauce and beans.
