Weinstein hospitalized

Harvey Weinstein was admitted to hospital in the US on his return to New York on Saturday. This shortly follows the news last week that this former Hollywood film producer’s conviction for sex crimes was overturned by the same city’s appeals court.

“The New York Department of Corrections has determined that Weinstein requires immediate medical attention. A host of tests are currently being performed on him, and he is being kept under observation,” his lawyer Arthur L. Aidala confirmed in a statement to AFP.

Police told US media that Weinstein was taken to New York’s Bellevue Hospital.

In a decision of four to three judges, this appeals court found on Thursday that the trial judge committed a critical error in 2020 by allowing prosecutors to present evidence from women who allege that Weinstein assaulted them, even if their allegations did not form part of the charges against him.

The appeals court found that this led to an unfair trial, and they ordered a new trial for Weinstein.

Weinstein (72) will now get a new trial in New York for the case in which he was sentenced to 23 years for two sex crimes. He still has to serve a separate 16-year rape sentence imposed against him in California.

Numerous Hollywood stars, including celebrities such as Rosanna Arquette, Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino, have expressed their shock and displeasure following the decision to overturn Weinstein’s 2020 conviction.

Since 2017, more than 80 women have accused the Oscar-winning producer of various acts of sexual assault and harassment. The revelations launched the #MeToo movement, which paved the way for women to disclose and fight against sexual violence in the workplace.
