Well-known food writer and wine expert passed away

The food writer and wine expert Michael Olivier died on Friday evening.

His family shared the news without disclosing the cause of his death. “We thank everyone for your support in this impossible time. May his soul rest in peace.”

Olivier was a restaurant veteran, author and wine connoisseur. As a young aspiring chef, he laid a solid foundation for his career at Le Cordon Bleu in London.

Over the next 30 years, he held a series of high-profile hospitality management positions. Among other things, he was the public relations manager for Boschendal and managed three successful restaurants in the Cape – Paddagang in Tulbagh, The Burgundy in Hermanus and Parks in Constantia. He was also featured as a chef on the TV breakfast show Espresso.

The restaurant veteran’s cookbook Friends Food. Flavor: Great South African Recipes saw the light in 2022. He has also published several other books.

Olivier received the Lannice Snyman Lifetime Achievement Award at the Eat Out Awards in 2013.

Olivier leaves behind his wife, Madeleine, and three children.
