The annual Absa Wildclawer school sports tournament kicked off on Wednesday at Diamantveld High School in Kimberley.
The tournament is in its 15th year and top school teams will compete until Sunday on the netball court, football and rugby fields respectively.
A total of 195 teams from 111 schools are participating in the tournament, one of the country’s most sought-after sports tournaments. This year there are 35 teams from the Northern Cape.
Two international rugby teams also make their debut in this year’s tournament. The teams are from St John’s College in New Zealand and Kirkham Grammar School in England.
New participants are Hoërskool Noordheuwel and Nico Malan Hoërskool while Hoërskool Waterkloof and Hoër Landbouskool Marlow make their return to the tournament.
Wednesday night’s opening ceremony produced a goosebump moment with the boys from St John’s College performing a traditional haka.
The sporting event is known for its legacy and significance in the world of school sports.
It started in 2009 with 12 teams in Paarl, and this year this tournament has developed into a global phenomenon.
The 2024 tournament, which now includes rugby, netball and soccer, boasts a record number of teams from different corners of the world.
Cassie Carstens, tournament manager, says they are excited to see how the tournament will reach new heights.
“What makes this year even more special is the inclusive spirit, with the exciting addition of two international schools to the lineup.
“This event is not just about competition; it’s about promoting friendships, sportsmanship and a love for the game.”
The tournament’s vision is clear: to offer equal opportunities to schools of all levels to participate and showcase their talents on an international stage.
“By promoting togetherness and camaraderie, the tournament aims to inspire the next generation of athletes,” said Carstens.
“We don’t just host a tournament; we are helping to shape the future. Through sport, we build stronger communities and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.”
