Write Gauteng gr. 1s and 8s coming in soon

Henry

Soon jump to prospective gr. 1 and gr. 8 learners in Gauteng for the 2024 school year.

This is the message from Solidarity’s Teachers’ Network after online registration for school admission in this province opened at 08:00 on Thursday. It closes on July 14 at midnight.

Parents therefore have a month to register their children, but are requested to do so sooner rather than later.

“With limited places in schools, we want to encourage parents to register their children as soon as possible to ensure that they are placed in the school of their choice,” says Johan Botha, deputy general secretary of the professional sector at Solidarity.

He says that mobilizing parents to enroll their children immediately and insist that they be placed at the school of their choice is “extremely essential”.

“The demand for mother tongue education continues to grow and Afrikaans schools are an indispensable part of the South African education landscape. The preferred language of instruction and mother tongue must also be indicated on the online platform.

“One of the most important decisions a parent makes is at which school their children will receive education. With this step, parents not only make a deliberate decision regarding the future of their child(ren) and the nature of the education they will receive, but they also commit themselves to that school community.

“By being an active part of our school communities, we as parents can work together with teachers and manage our schools in such a way that they serve the best interests of our children.”

Matome Chiloane, MEC for education in the province, said earlier that improvements had been made to the online system and that “it will work much better than before”.

Parents must create online login details (a username and password) on the department’s portal and they will use these details to access the system again later.

Chiloane also warned people to carefully follow each step in the process.

Parents will receive feedback on progress with the application via SMS.

The first placements will be made on September 4 and parents are requested to accept offers as soon as possible so that space can be created for others in the system.
