An extensive air, sea and shoreline search is underway at Kampsbaai beach in Cape Town after a young man disappeared into the sea.

According to Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), members of the NSRI Bakoven were called to the beach shortly before 14:00 on Friday after eyewitnesses saw a man disappearing into the sea. Several other rescue organisations, the police and ambulance services were also called.

Members of the NSRI Bakoven sent a rescue vessel into the water and four helicopters from Cape Town Helicopters were deployed to help with aerial searches. Five rescue swimmers from the NSRI were also deployed during the search.

Lambinon said the missing 21-year-old man from Middelburg, Mpumalanga, was part of a church group that visited the beach during a weekend church event in Groenpunt.

“No sign of the man has been found and the search continues.” Drones are also being used in the search.
