The body of a young woman who fell to her death in the mountains in the vicinity of the Wemmershoek Dam could only be removed 24 hours later due to bad weather conditions.

According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), a rescue team was called on Sunday evening to the Wemmershoek area, between the Paarl and Franschhoek, after a group of people who were removing invasive plants raised the alarm about one of their members who had fallen.

The group was getting out of their remote camp in the mountains around the Wemmershoek Dam in order to avoid the worst of the stormy weather, when a member of the team fell. Rescue workers went to the scene where the 22-year-old woman was found dead.

However, due to the stormy conditions, a decision was made to recover the woman’s body only on Monday morning. A multidisciplinary team, including members of the police and provincial emergency services, was involved in the rescue operation.

The woman’s body was placed on a stretcher and carried to a collection point where her body was handed over to the police and forensic services. The operation was only completed shortly after 20:00 on Monday.

The WSAR expressed its deepest sympathy to the friends and family of the deceased.
