Zebra filly finally boasts a name

A name was drawn from the hundreds of entries received for a zebra foal at the Klapperkop nature reserve.

The city council of Pretoria launched a special competition and invited the public to choose a name for this new foal that was born last year.

More than 300 entries were received.

Cilliers Brink, mayor of Pretoria, says there were several fun entries and some of the names considered were Jabari, Khumba, Kunye and Oreo.

“We are very happy to announce our baby zebra’s name is Kamari. It is a Swahili name that means ‘moon’,” says Brink.

11-year-old Arielle from Sunnyside, who entered the name, said the zebra is a beautiful, graceful animal, just like the moon in the night sky.

“What I love about zebras is that their stripes are as unique as fingerprints. They can easily fit into their environment and I’m surprised that they stand and sleep – it’s very interesting,” she added.

Arielle receives two nights’ accommodation for four people at Rietvlei nature reserve.

“Many thanks to everyone who participated in the competition,” adds Brink. “We loved all your names and we appreciate your participation.”

He encourages the public to visit the city’s nature reserves:

  • Bronkhorstspruit Nature Reserve
  • Faerie Glen Nature Reserve
  • Groenkloof Nature Reserve
  • Moreleta Gorge Nature Area
  • Rietvlei Nature Reserve
  • Wonderboom Nature Reserve

“Our nature reserves boast a host of animals, such as buffalo, rhinos and cheetahs and some even offer game drives,” says Brink.
