Another suspect is behind bars in connection with the murder of a sergeant attached to the police at the Mahamba border post.

Sgt. Langelihle Hlatshwayo was shot in May just as he entered his home on Evander. He was not on duty at that time. Hlatshwayo was able to call a friend who rushed him to a local hospital, from where he was transferred to the Mediclinic Trichardt. He was pronounced dead on arrival there.

Three suspects, including Hlatshwayo’s widow, were arrested shortly afterwards.

The police’s unit for serious organized crime on Secunda has now arrested another suspect, a 40-year-old man, in connection with the murder. Col. Katlego Mogale, spokesperson for the Falcons, says the man was caught on Friday.

After the initial arrests, it was established that Hlatshwayo’s wife was in contact with a man from Ermelo – and that this man’s vehicle was used in the shooting of the policeman.

“The suspect was traced and found in the Ermelo hospital with gunshot wounds. He was arrested and under police guard,” says Mogale.

Police seized his mobile phone to analyze as part of the investigation and he will appear in court as soon as his medical condition allows.
