56-year-old Port Alfred man jailed for raping 5-year-old girl

A 56-year-old Port Alfred man was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Grahamstown High Court on Thursday.

"The ruthless felon, Makwedini Skoluku, was given the lengthy sentenced after he had lured a 5-year-old child from her grandmother’s house offering her and her friends money to purchase snacks at a shop," described police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

"Skoluku kept the victim behind as the others went to the shop. He then took the victim to his place of residence where he brutally raped her."

Capt Govender said that after a while when her friends returned and called out for the victim and the accused refused to open the door where he positioned.

"He gave her money to keep her quiet.

"The friends then ran to the child’s mother and informed her they couldn’t her child," she said.

"The mother together with the children went back to the last place the kids had seen the victim, while on route community members heard what had happened and followed them.

"A local anti-crime member was called to assist as the child was at this stage missing."

She added that when the accused was questioned by angry community members and attempted to enter his dwelling, he used a garden fork to defend himself.

"When the door was pushed open, the little fragile victim managed to get out.

"During a scuffle with the community, he fell to the ground where punctured his arm with the garden fork he tried to defend himself with," Capt Govender.

"The local anti-crime member, SAPS managed to contain the situation and contact the SAPS."

Port Alfred Cluster Commander, Brigadier Morgan Govender, commended investigating officer, Constable Sandra Catherine, of the Port Alfred Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offence unit for the meticulous and diligent investigation conducted in ensuring the successful conviction and lengthy sentencing of the accused.
