Coalition plans motion of no confidence in Tshwane speaker

The multi-party coalition in Tshwane has agreed that ActionSA should submit a motion of no confidence in Mncedi Nzwanana, Tshwane speaker, after Nzwanana blocked similar motions in the past.

According to Jackie Mathabathe, caucus leader of ActionSA in Tshwane, Nzwanana has consistently proven himself to be incompetent since his election in March and was unable to understand and apply the basic rules of the council.

“The speaker has destabilized council proceedings by using his office to promote party interests and has stopped all attempts to remove him as speaker.

“Although we understand certain powers – that the speaker approves or rejects issues that are tabled in the council – his powers do not give him the luxury to do so arbitrarily and without a valid reason,” says Mathabathe .

ActionSA believes Nzwanana’s election – and the possible bribing of councilors to get him elected – was part of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the ANC’s efforts to destabilize coalition governments ahead of the 2024 elections in order to secure majority votes.

“There can be no stability in the Tshwane council when the ANC-EFF speaker is actively trying to thwart the efforts of the multi-party coalition government – to normalize municipal operations in the nation’s capital.”

The motion is expected to be heard next Thursday.

“Should the speaker try to stop the motion again, ActionSA will use legal aid to force Nzwanana to amend his actions.

“The election of a new, competent speaker of the council will ensure that good governance is restored in the city and that residents can have the confidence that their interests are prioritized over party politics.”
