Miss. USA’s last wish

The last wish of the late former Miss. USA Cheslie Kryst was that her mother is sharing with the world the memoir she penned before her sudden death in 2022.

This wish has now been fulfilled with the publication of By the Time You Read This: The Space between Cheslie’s Smile and Mental Illness – Her Story in Her Own Wordsin which the former beauty queen, lawyer and television personality reveals that due to her struggle with depression, she carried with her an “unshakable feeling that I didn’t belong”.

RNews earlier reported that she died after falling from a 60-story building in New York in January 2022. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kryst’s mother, April Simpkins, added her own voice at the end of the book, telling how she has to deal with the loss of her daughter on a daily basis.

All proceeds from the book’s sales go to the Cheslie C. Kryst Foundation, which was founded by Simpkins and supports mental health programs for youth and young adults.

Kryst’s death rocked the beauty world at the time.

“You meant everything to so many people. You have made a mark in this world and touched so many lives. We celebrate your life. I love you so much, you are my eternal friend and forever my Miss. USA,” said Zozibini Tuni, former Miss. South Africa and Ms. Universe, in a moving social media message written shortly after Kryst’s death.

Timeless Schumacher watches at auction

Eight watches from the collection of legendary racing driver Michael Schumacher will be auctioned by Christie’s auctioneers in Geneva, Switzerland in May.

Among these watches is a unique FP Journe Vagabondage 1 Model from 2004 which commemorates each of Schumacher’s F1 championship victories. Scuderia Ferrari team principal Jean Todt gave it to him at the time.

The custom platinum-cased watch features exceptional detailing, including the Ferrari logo and Schumacher’s signature helmet.

The watch is “probably the most important Vagabondage FP Journe ever made,” said Remi Guillemin, Christie’s head of watches in Europe and the US.

The collection is expected to total $4 million (approx R76 000 000) will yield. The money will apparently be used to fund Schumacher’s treatment.

The 54-year-old suffered serious head injuries in 2013 after a skiing accident in the French Alps and has been cared for in a mansion in Switzerland since 2014.

At the time, Todt said in the British media that he was sad that his friendship with Schumacher would never be the same again. “There’s just not the same communication as before.”

Popular romantic comedy now 13 going on 20?

Celebrities from the 2004 hit movie 13 going on 30 held a virtual reunion this week to celebrate the movie’s 20th birthday.

“Twenty years! We are three Baby Boomers defying Zoom – because we want to thank you,” said the movie’s lead actors Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo of Avengers-faam and Judy Greer wrote in a joint message that was posted on Instagram on Tuesday.

“To every person who loved this movie with us: thank you. We see you, we appreciate you, and we love you!”

Garner plays teenager Jenna Rink, who dreams of being an adult and, thanks to a bit of magic, wakes up as a 30-year-old the morning after her 13th birthday.

The movie grossed more than $96 million (about R1 825 million) at the box office and was praised at the time for its nostalgia, humor and empowering message. It has remained a favorite among lovers of romantic comedies over the years.

“I met a young girl the other day after one of the movie’s anniversary screenings. You won’t believe it, her mother called her ‘Jenna,’” Garner laughed during the Zoom reunion.

A dystopian California? No, that’s the Namib desert!

Viewers of the Amazon Prime series Fallout will perhaps notice something familiar in this series.

Fallout is based on a video game of the same name and takes place in a futuristic period after a fictional world war.

The abandoned ghost town of Klomanskop in Namibia is used in this series to represent a barren, dystopian California in the USA.

While Fallout was filmed in New Jersey, New York and Utah, the production also traveled to the Namib Dunes in 2022 to film along Namibia’s Skull Coast and Kolmanskop.

“It was a unique experience for us. I have never shot somewhere so remote. It’s an incredibly beautiful and strange place,” the series’ director, Jonathan Nolan, told Britain’s Evening Standard newspaper at the time.

Other international films like Mad Max: Fury Road, The King is Alive and Dust Devil was also filmed there.
