Painting shows monument like never before

This is the Voortrekker monument you know, but from a whole new angle.

And artist Ilze van Wyk’s work on the world-famous monument – a three-dimensional multimedia painting – turns heads.

The painting took Van Wyk more than three years to complete. She describes it as a depiction of one of her favorite places in South Africa that she wanted to share with the world.

“I decided to make the artwork because the VTM is very close to my heart,” says Van Wyk.

“Looking at the VTM is indescribable; there really is so much to see that one discovers something new every time. That’s why I decided to donate the painting to the VTM.”

The artwork, entitled “Reversed perspective”, creates the illusion that one is moving right around the monument when looking at it.

Van Wyk is also a descendant of one of the builders of the VTM and Bart Pretorius and says that it is particularly special for her to know that her family’s history is being told here.

She recently presented the work of art to the monument at a function of the FAK. It really got visitors talking, especially because of the impressive optical illusion you see when you view the painting from various angles.
