Five perish in Dutywa bakkie accident, nine in hospital, police investigating

Dutywa police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after five people - four women and one man, died in an accident on Friday afternoon while nine others escaped with injuries.

"It is alleged that a bakkie that was from Dutywa town had an accident at about 15:00 along the N2 Highway, near Doti Village, Dutywa," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The bakkie was not involved with other vehicle in the accident.  

"The cause of the accident is not known at this point in time, but is under investigation by Dutywa Police."

Captain Manatha said that the five people are believed to have died instantly at the accident.

"Nine other passengers were seriously injured and rushed to Butterworth Hospital," he added.

"The identities of the deceased will be withheld until their families are officially informed of their death.

"The ages of the deceased and the injured could not be established."
