Chippa suffer upsetting home defeat to Baroka FC

Chippa United suffered their first home loss of the 2017/18 ABSA Premiership season, when they meagrely slumped 3-1 to Baroka FC at the NMB Stadium on Tuesday night.

The loss was a poor one for the Chilli Boys, not just because it was a home defeat, but also because it was against one of the league’s disfavoured sides, with Baroka ending second-last in the 2016/17 season.

In three games so far, it was Chippa’s second loss of the season and Baroka’s first victory – with Bakgaga’s first two matches succumbing to draws, and their undefeated run, with no loss yet to their name, will boost their confidence as the season unfolds.

The Chilli Boys shot themselves in the foot just before half-time, when they awarded Baroka with an own goal by defender James Okwuosa.

The home side then locked level, when an exceptional strike by Katlego Mashego from a penalty shot, found space to net his side’s first goal on the 60th minute.

However, Chippa’s fortunes were no long-lasting, as Pirates-loaned Gift Motupa bagged a goal just five minutes later to take the lead for Baroka.

As the match grew closer to the finish, Chippa erupted  to an onslaught of heavy attack in attempts to draw level once again in the final 20 minutes of the game, but it was to no avail as they lacked execution. Instead, Baroka salted Chippa's wounds through another goal from Motupa on the 89th minute, which nailed the coffin in for the visitors.

Baroka are now sitting comfortably at 6th spot on the PSL standings, with the Chilli Boys languishing at 10th. Chippa are set to take on the Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday in their fourth 2017/18 PSL encounter.
